Troops Arrive

May 2, 1992

Poor planning, miscommunications and the failure of government officials to recognize the magnitude of the uprising delayed deployment of National Guard troops until the evening of April 30. By that time the rioting had been going on for over twenty-four hours. I didn't notice any troops in my neighborhood until May 2nd, after most of the anger had dissipated and the rebellion had begun to burn itself out. This truck was part of a small convoy I saw rolling up Western Avenue. Ultimately, over 13,000 soldiers were deployed at strategic locations throughout the city.
