On the Street

April 1992

Terrorists could not inflict this kind of devastation on our society in their wildest dreams.

A 1995 study found that over 236,400 people in Los Angeles County were homeless at some point during a year period. In 2001 the waiting list for public housing in L.A. County had 52,667 families on it (the county only owns a total of 3,600 public housing units). This in a nation that spends hundreds of billions of dollars a year on the military to defend its wealth and privilege against the rest of the world.

This photo was shot in the eastern part of downtown Los Angeles—not far from the "nice" neighborhood where respectable multinational companies peddle their trendy commodities.
